The dystopian concept isn’t as recent an idea as many people believe, and the word itself can be traced back to 1747. Samuel Butler’s 1872 novel, “Erewhon,” is a great example of a dystopian play-on-words, with the almost-backward spelling of “nowhere” explicitly signaling the intention to reverse the “utopian” ideals.
