Michael Collins admitted that one of his biggest fears on his Apollo 11 mission was that he would have to leave Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon to return to earth. This eventuality may have occurred if they could not successfully get back to the mission’s lunar orbiter. President Nixon even had a speech prepared in case of this possibility.
