With navigational equipment improving during the 15th century, Portuguese sailors became more confident in exploring the oceans. They began to sail further out into the Atlantic, carefully utilizing the winds, currents and even the paths of birds as guides. Their biggest achievement during this time occurred in the 1440s when they managed to travel some 800 miles west of Portugal to Azores, an archipelago of small islands.
